My Best Album in 2004

LAST VERDICT....

JIMMY EAT WORLD - FUTURES

It's the electric shock that the music made, it revives my heart to believe in rock again.
The spirit is here, Clarity is back, no more radio friendly shit but true Jimmy!

1st RUNNER-UP...
LITTLE BIRDY - BIG BIG LOVE

I was so going to put this album up to the best one, because it is like a perfect CD to rock.
But where is "This is the love song"? and it drives me abit sentimental sometimes.

2nd RUNNER-UP...
RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - WANT TWO

I was hooked by the calmness, the effortlessness and the poetic of melody.
His voice is like the angel of the opera, and really love the lyrics.

Top 20 Tracks in 2004:
(Not in order & Exclude all the tracks of the albums above.)
Placebo - This Picture
Bjork - Who it is
Kelis - Trick Me
Phoenix - If I Ever Feel Better
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Franz Ferdinand - This Fire
Urthboy - No Rider
Third Eye Blind - Blinded
Prodigy - Girls
Downsyde - Les Fortunate
The Killers - Somebody Told Me
Stylophonic - Way of Life
The Cat Empire - The Chariot
The Chemical Brothers - Get Yourself High
Scissor Sister - Tits On the Radio

Why Worry? It's Not Up To You Anyway.

These few days I feel like a piece of shit, pretty much influenced by the fatal tsunami news. It's a shock to me, the number of death has already reach 90,000 today. My heart aches for those people so bad, I really wish I could do something for them. I really hate the way that I can actually do nothing no matter how much I care about something, this is always the reason I get my depression. Perhaps it's time to learn how to shrug all these emotional shit off and move on, it's inhumane but at least it makes me feel better to admit myself as an ordinary person.

So I'm gonna end up all the 2004 shit before new year or I'll shrug it off and get drunk immediately in 2005.

What The Hell Do You Want In Christmas?

You must be very disappointed that I didn't send you e-card, not even put a greeting here for xmas. Nope, you are not getting anything from me, just forget about it. Does it make me a bad person? Why Christmas is so f**king important that I must do greetings? I really appreciate friends who gave me a card and a present, but if you hate me because I didn't give you something in return, I said whatever! Don't get me wrong, I like Christmas, but I'm sick of people who so obligated to do all those Christmas bullshit just to show they really care about you. If you care, why have to wait til Christmas? Well, I can tell you I do love you all but just not showing it in Christmas, so bite me~

However, I'd love to say Happy New Year to you. New Year is a celebration for a new tomorrow and to review your previous year with gratitude, which I fully respect. I would love to witness this day with all my important friends and people that I care and whose who care about me. :) Of course that is super idealistic, knowing my family in HK has already proven that is impossible. Well... What I wanna say is you guys should appreciate people who celebrate new year with you, they may disappear next year. But if you really care, why have to wait until New Year to let them know? Action today before anything stopping you.

Back to 25 December 2004, I want to say thank you so much to Kendra who have me in her warm and fuzzy dinner. It is a shock that she is leaving soon, another heartbreaking news... *sob* She is a bright and sweet honey ever, with a lot of support and care to me all the time. I swear to God, going to Germany is a MUST do list before I died.

It was a very nice German (handled by Kendra) + Aussie (handled by Jesse) dinner, I feel so grateful to have these two good friends cook for me, Danke! *muah* Stew cabbage, German dumpling with gravy, roast turkey and chicken, 'Hoi Sin' prawn and seafood warp...etc. Everything is nicely done, very impressive and delicious. I had like two full dishes (plate is like jumbo size!!), I just kept eating without noticing that I was full. Pretty much you can imagine, I look like a pregnant woman... *grrr....*

It's always mingle time after dinner, people are very kool there. Besides Kendra and Jesse, Susan and Scotty are very nice host there too, not even mentioned new friends that I met like Kyoko, Yuki and Christine - Amazing and gorgeous girls~~ yoroshiku :) The rest of the night were quiet but very warm and comfortable and fun, seeing the housemates opening their presents somehow makes me feel happier than me having present. This gathering really fixed my cynical smile, thank you so much.

Hey, special thanks for Sophie my dear jellybean who drove me home yesterday (or I would be a wet dog) and brought me back my camera this morning. *muah* Yea I took some nice pictures for the dinner, and I'm uploading it to my photo album, so go and check it out! Enjoy your holiday kids, I'm out of here.

P.S. goodbye is reluctant but temporal. *muah* beautiful!
P.S.S. why things always like giving out hope when one is about to give up?

No Matter How High It Goes, All Leaves Always Fall Back Down To The Root

Living my life with no Jimmy's Future is quite unbearable, so I use other great bands to calm me down. You probably have heard about ACDC, but do you know about DCFC? Death Cab For Cutie, I discovered this band couple years ago in the Internet and just love it, heard FBi played that several times on air was joyful. This week I put their album back on my CD player, Transatlanticism is one of their amazing CDs, ya know... it's like something you don't have to skip any track, just lay back, let the music play itself, and relax your heart. Actually, all their CDs totally show you how good music could push their limit beyond the term 'excellent'.

To whose have heard about DCFC and require something fresh, go for their inheritor The Postal Service! (We don't even have their album in FBi yet...) Their 2003 album Give Up is one of my precious treasure at home, in other word, if my home caught a fire, this CD would be in the first round of my packing. It's very similar to DCFC indeed, they are both electronic indie band, but I think The Postal Service is more upbeating. You have probably heard of a band called Iron and Wine, they sing Such Great Height in Garden State, the fact: this is a cover song of The Postal Service.

So who will be next heir of this electronic indie family tree? As I know, there are two bands who are qualified to put on the title of DCFC III, namely Immoor and The Most Serene Republic. Both bands are very new to me during to the scarcity of information, but with a few sample tracks from them and my own research, I'm 90% sure they are part of the family.

Besides The Postal Service, Immoor is a band with influences from Boards Of Canada and The Go Find. They have just released their debut EP The Concrete Boots. It has opened for or appreciates bands like the killers, boards of canada, or dj shadow. Whereas The Most Serene Republic is a gorgeous band which blend of DCFC, Flaming Lips and Broken Social Scene, abit more poppy but would not disappoint you for the bouncing beats. As I know, they also released a LP not long ago - Underwater Cinematographer, unfortunately... I don't have one. *Putting it in my xmas wishing list*

P.S. Chris Coco, it's not funny, do not scare me anymore, I started seeing illusions already...
P.S.S. Have you ever did something very pointless, which make you hate yourself as an idiot? I did one today.

Who Is It That Never Let You Down? Hand It In Over.

God it's so hot today, not a good feeling at all. First thing I felt when I open my eyes is a bad headache, seems like a fever. (Pauly must be you...) Tried to get some groceries, but I ran back to the flat once I stepped out the door, it's like an oven outside. So I decided to be a prisoner today rather than a ready-to-bake cookie...

Sleep until evening, finally I went out to see A Very Long Engagement by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (director of Amelie). It is a very sweet movie, mostly unbelievable coz it is barely possible to be happened in this society. Jeunet did an excellent director in this movie, personally I love his arrangement of the story, which is based on the novel by Sebastien Japriot. Romantic scenes and a very touching ending, is that how a Frenchman make his movie? Beware of poison candy. Gaspard Ulliel is so cute tho. *Toxicated*

I see some illusions recently, it's like a ghost haunting me anywhere. I am quite pissed by that, I saw the illusion again today and I used my brolly to beat it on the street. People probably think I'm a psycho or something, but I can't help it. No I didn't take any drugs, and no I am not pregnant neither. Anyway, if you see me beating something invisible or hitting air, just back off unless you are confident enough to duck my punch, then come up and slap me hard.

P.S. How could Chris Martin sing RnB??

Chained Effect of a Bomb Explosion

It's very easy to self destruct, no matter how good you were yesterday. That's what a HIV positive patient said, who is fighting with death for a better tomorrow each day. Life is so fragile that could be shattered in any second, but such a vigorous spirit in this broken body shows me how strong human being could be. My brother once wrote me a letter, there's a sentence in the footnote, "life is all depend on how you see it. It's harsh if you view it from the bottom; It's easy if you view it from the top."

Don't have to be pessimistic to be realistic, sometimes you just have to shrug off all the shit and walk on. Just bare in mind that noone/nothing have right to control your decision, this is a very selfish thought but realistic, so keep walking like Johnny Walker.
note: Be awared of Karma! You are responsible for your own decision

P.S. I'll start Allnighter in January again, exciting huh? Stay Tuned.

Don't Mix Your Drink

I just get back from the City, and there was a guy passed out in the train. He was standing at the door, then suddenly fell down to the stair and hit his head on the floor. It was like a big bang and all I saw was an unconscious guy laid in front of me. His friend kept calling him 'Rendy! Rendy!', and the only thing that I can do was passing down a bottle of water to his friend and asked someone to contact the train operator. Later on, he started to throw up and get his conscious back. This moment I need to back off, since that was really stink. Well, Mr.Rendy, next time don't mix your drink, nor drink too much.

I went to see The Unicorns and Dappled Cities Fly in Spectrum, thanks to Sophie throwing out an unexpected pass. I was very tired after 4 hours swimming in the pool this afternoon, not even mention how sore my body was, but I didn't miss it fortunately.

Dappled Cities Fly was very nice to watch in live, something in this band I found very familiar with. Guitarist Dave look 95% like ex-Bassist Joel Deewester in Whence He Came, they must be related or something. Also, the music of these two bands are soooo simliar, which is pretty weird to me. The Unicorns... a very funny but odd band from Canada. I like their music and their wit, but I think some kinky people in crowd stole half of the attention in the show. The Whister girl was one of the best, she just scream the whole time, funny somewhere in the crowd just shouted out "UNNECESSARY!", but didn't shut her up. I told Vivian "I wish she lost her voice", am I being too vicious?

Anyway, hey good news! I just checked my final uni result, and I am graduating this year! Herray! Now I'm thinking... Should I stay or should I go? Tell me, do you want me to stay? :)

P.S. Good Luck on your DJing tomorrow night, Levins.

Kiss Me with the Cherry Lipstick, Never Wash it Off My Face...

EXILS by Tony Gatlif - Best Director in Cannes 2004 (Commences Jan 6)

Today I am unusually tired, but I still managed to work and watch Exils with Sonic. (Dude you are the legend, thanks for showing up in the last minute)

It's another travelling movie, but this time they are going back to the land of root. "A Free-Wheeling, exuberant and heartfelt journey that swims like a salmon against the traditional migrant tide of the Franco-Algerian Community" (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian) Pretty much you can figure it out, it is a movie about finding home and self-discovery.

It is a French film that SBS definitely love to play in prime time, story related to race, culture and characters' inner selves. There are some filming techniques I really love, and the traditional dance was stunning. (It's abit like trance dancing plus some ritual exorcism) I personally think motorcycle diaries is better than Exils, not even mention the impact of the story is stronger. But overall it is very good movie, really get people to think too.

Here is some thought after watching Exils:

After the movie, Sonic asked me if I miss home of not. It's funny many people love to ask me this question, is it because I am an international student here? I glanced his face and said, "Define Home..."

Probably most of the people would say home is where you born, where your family is, where you belong to. Under this circumstance, it seems that Hong Kong is my home, and if I say it is not, everyone would probably think I am a traitor. People who know the background of Hong Kong would also pop up this question to me, "So do you like the British government or the China one?" And my head started to ache everytime I heard this, because it is more like a pitfall to trip me down.

My identity is quite complicated, you can say I am a British (coz I'm holding a British Passport); or Honky (well I born in Hong Kong); or Chinese (coz HK is part of China); or Asian (guess it's becoz I look yellow). To be honest, I am not ashame of who I am, but I want to escape all these identity. I hate to be specified, because it generalises me. If so, I rather being over-generalised, in other words, I am just a human. Then everything could be easier, I can define my home is the earth.

I can see myself lost the sense of national identity, people may think this is sad, especially my parent who would like me to be proud of being a Chinese. I just know that I'm not a Chinese, perhaps I should put it this way, I am not just a Chinese, and Chinese cannot simply describe me. Sounds funny, but see: A man is not a man when he is driving in the car, he is something cyborg-liked, the mixture of a man and a vehicle. And I never feel bad of losing the national identity.

Furthermore, it is even harder to define Australian. If you understand the history of the Aussieland, you wouldn't say White people are Australian. No offense, I respect that you love Australia and so proud to be in this land, but you are just not Australian. Think back your ancestor's history and find your root. However, the more you push your history, you may find that you belongs to nothing, coz there is no race back to many many years ago. And you just realise that race is just a ridiculous bullshit.

Ironically, we are just a group of smartarses, and most of the things in this world are bullshit.

P.S. I miss home.

A Second of Thought Leads An Eternal Aspiration

Here is my thought after watching The Motorcycle Diaries.

Been living for twenty three years, but feel like just been in the world for a year. Lots of excitment, lots of disappointment, lots of things have left out and unseen. Sometimes just wonder how big we could be in this huge world, then how big we could be again in this gigantic galaxy, and even further, how insignificant we actually are if there are something else outside and the galaxy is just a tiny part of it.

People always want to make a difference to the world, You realised you are just not as mighty as Jesus Christ, not as smart as Albert Einstein, not as rich as Bill Gate... Then what can you really do? Wanna make a revolution? It always involves guns, war, innocent life, destruction. The worst? Inequality and discrimination are still existing, so what is the purpose of revolution? fighting for equality or fighting for power and authority?

Step back abit from the extreme, help the child in the third world by sending money and food there. Sitting at the couch, calling the world vision. How many can you help? Does it really help by taking them into the civilization? No matter how many children you sponsor, still there is a intangible boundary between you and them.

I began to hate being preached since I was teenager, family said I am ignorant and rebellious, just because I have my own opinion of the world. But why I have to be driven by patriarachism, it's just another version of Nazism. I want to get away this civilisation and back to the land again. I always enjoy feeling the earth on the ground, the sand on the shore, the water in the ocean, the moss on the rock, the skin of the tree and so on. I believe to change the world, firstly we have to change ourselves first. To change ourselves, we have to go out and experience the world all by ourselves.

My best friend Pauly and me are now thinking to pack our bags and travel around before settle down. This is a very spontaneous thought, but the will is unbelievably strong. If this is really gonna happen, it would definitely make a difference to each of our life. We both are dying to go to Peru, so South America may be the land of consideration; Next choice would be Europe since I always want to go to Scotland and feel the Skye of Isle, which we are thinking to start the trip from Hong Kong, then China, follow the train and all the way to Europe.

Who want to join?

P.S. Wednesday night, I'll go and watch Exils in Chauvel Cinema.

Who is the Bitch Nigga?

Aiiii! I am back and I would like to talkkkkk to you... Yes, I feel amazingly great today, because I just had a terrific weekend, which really bring me back to life. To begin with, let first give a big up to two of my best friends who just turned to 21 - Jackson and Christian, welcome to the ADULT WORLD! *winks*

Talking about the great weekend, I went down to Coledale for Christian's 21st. I had a crazy time with him and all his gorgeous friends. We stayed in a very nice penthouse for 3 days 2 nights, and it was magnificent! (except those hideous mosquitos, and... it wasn't totally isolated as the brochure describes, the train track was right next to the house) Good thing is it's near the beach, and they have a 5-man spa as well as an exciting trampoline, of course we didn't waste any chance to utilize all the facilities~ :)

It's always kool to keep yourself abit sober sometimes, especially hanging out with your friend's friends, because you will get to know your friend's secret or embarrassing stories. *smirks* During these couple of days, I get to know Christian more, such as his new nick "Bitch Nigga" and how he passed out while opening the sliding door. Opps, did I promise him not to tell anyone? oh well, I was drunk so I don't really remember.

Let's talk about few days ago in Sydney, I found a very funky place to hang out now. Paul took me this Lounge Cafe in Surry Hill, it was our boom boom hot place now. This place got a lot of kewl people hanging around there, not mention how nice the atmosphere is. They have different pieces of second hand furitures put together, but everything just fit perfectly and reflecting each other's characters. Getting excited already? It is just near the Columbian on Oxford Street, turn right and it's one the first right corner. Mind you, they closed every Monday. You will probably see me very often over there. :))) OH! And don't forget to try their Chai Shake, they are yummy, but may put you to sleep.

Awhile ago, I just went to see Motorcycle Daries by Walter Salles with Paul, it was such a good movie. Back to 60's, two Argentines (One of them is Ernesto Guevara before he becomes the icon and historical figure the world has come to know as Ché Guevara.) decided to travel around the South America, and there're many stories in their trip that change their live. It is very inspiring with many political issue, racism and life, which is absolutely me and Pauly's top movie. We are also thinking to backpack together in South America or Europe or China, and the motivation is very very strong, I hope we can really make it. ((I will talk about in the next post))

To all my musik fellows, if you have a chance, have a listen to 'Big Big Love' by Little Birdy, this is my favourite album at the moment - sexy, honest, rock and beautiful. Another superdupa nice album is 'Future' by Jimmy Eat World, if you know them well, you would probably agree that 'Bleed America' is a big downhill after 'Clarity', but they have invented a new way that blend the element of Clarity back to their music. 'Future' is definitely my top choice, don'ttttttttttt miss it.
